Warmer weather is finally here, and the open road is calling your name. It’s time to put the jackets back in the closet, put the top down on your cabriolet, and take in the beauty of western North Carolina with a scenic drive in your Porsche. Here at Porsche Asheville, we are lucky to be in the center of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with beautiful scenery around every corner. Here are just a few of our favorites
From breathtaking waterfalls to the museum commemorating the first forestry school in America, the Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway is 76 miles of fun. Made up of several highways that form a loop, this byway doesn’t often appear on maps or GPS. Turn right onto US 276 immediately upon entering Brevard. Once you see the stone pillars honoring those who served in World War I, your adventure has begun.
The Newfound Gap Road is a scenic drive from Cherokee to the highest point along US Highway 441. 5,046 feet from sea level, the Newfound Gap allows you to straddle the border between North Carolina and Tennessee as you look upon miles of greenery. Drop the top on your 718 Boxster and enjoy the ride.
The Cherohala Skyway began life as an idea brought up at a Kiwanis Club meeting in Tellico Plains in 1958. Club members spoke of the need for a road connecting East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. "A highway that would enable their youngsters to search for the reality inside the dreams of their parents,” as Jim Thompson wrote in Wagon Train: 30 Years Across the Far Blue Mountains.
It would be nearly 40 years and over $100 million later before the road was opened, and it now consists of 36 miles of scenic overlooks and picnic areas. Be sure your 911 Targa is full of gas before you go, as there are no gas stations along the route.
