3 Ways Turbocharged Updates Impact the 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera

After 50 years of perfecting the 911 Carrera’s design, Porsche decided to take one of their most classic models and propel it into the 21st century. How?

The base model of the 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera now features a turbocharged engine.

Many Porsche enthusiasts were outraged at the news. Mostly nervous this change would sacrifice the 911 Carrera’s classic throaty growl and carnal power, enthusiasts waited with bated breath, anxious for their chance to test the new design. And when the time came, they were pleasantly surprised.

Along with the Boxster and Cayman, the turbocharged Carrera underwent a series of test drives by popular critics like Motor Trend. Check out their video review of the 2017 911 Carrera S:

The 3 things you need to know about the 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera.

The base model features an entirely new engine design

A 3.8-liter, twin-turbo flat six engine now sits comfortably at the rear of the 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera. Many were worried that a turbocharged engine would take away power from this notoriously fast Porsche, but the engineers made sure that wouldn’t be the case.

This new engine actually has more power than previous generations. Offering 370 hp and 331 lb.-ft. of torque, the twin-turbo engine gets the 911 Carrera from 0-60 in a mere 4.4 seconds.

Outfit your model to achieve the 911 Carrera’s classic sound

According to critics, there’s no denying that a turbocharged engine can’t attain the same sound as the original technology, but Porsche makes sure you can get close. Combine the available sport exhaust system with the cabriolet body style, and it’ll be like Porsche never left the original tech behind.

Get the power you want with the fuel economy you need

Turbocharged engines enhance fuel economy, especially for the 911 Carrera. With two options for transmission, you also have two choices for fuel economy. Opt for the Porsche manual transmission and your Carrera can achieve up to 20 MPG City and 29 MPG Highway. The famed PDK transmission offers slightly higher numbers coming in at 22 MPG City and 30 MPG Highway.

For even more powerful performance specs, consider checking out the Porsche 911 Carrera Turbo, a trim packed full of impressive features.
